Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of an African country
  • Be ordinarily resident in an African country (unless temporarily absent for study/work with the intention to return, or have been displaced)
  • Apply for a full-time Master’s course of up to one year in length at the University of Cambridge
  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification
  • Meet the academic entry requirements of your chosen course
  • Demonstrate commitment to giving back to your community, home country, or Africa more generally
  • Meet the University of Cambridge’s standard admission requirements
  • Demonstrate leadership potential and commitment to social impact

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars selection committee carefully assesses applicants on multiple dimensions, including their academic excellence and readiness for Cambridge’s meticulous programs, proven leadership experience and dedication to social impact, and strong commitment to advancing climate resilience and sustainable development in Africa. Additionally, the committee considers the quality and relevance of each candidate’s course application, the clarity of their academic and career goals, and their vision for applying their education to address pressing challenges. Ultimately, the selection focuses on identifying individuals with the potential to become ethical, transformative leaders who will create lasting, positive change within their communities and across the African continent.
